Spencer Glover

Spencer Glover is a successful photographer. Gallery 545 is delighted to have exclusive representation of his work in Northern Ireland.
Born and now back living in Dublin, Ireland, Glover has lived in the UK, Italy, the US, and Middle East. He obtained a Fine Art degree from the National College of Art and Design, Dublin, and had a career as a publisher before returning to his art practice. His photographs have been exhibited across Ireland and internationally, including at the Royal Ulster Academy (Belfast), the Royal Hibernian Academy (Dublin) and Rotterdam Photo fair and festival (Netherlands). His work is held in public and private collections in Ireland, the UK and Europe.
Glover’s work is about photography itself. All his images are constructed truths, built upon the belief and expectations that the camera never lies, while at the same time looking at and pushing the boundaries of photographic reality. Although his work is constructed, and arguably fake, it exists in the real world and in real time - with real people and objects, in real places, doing real and often ordinary things, but maybe in contexts we might not expect. This contradiction of what is real and not real, creates an uncertainty that intends to disconcert the viewer and prompt questions and interpretations.
Commenting about his work, Glover remarks: ‘My aim is to play with the assumptions of fact, fiction and fake; this gives me the opportunity to weave in contemporary issues such as identity, race, nationality, and control.’
