Originally from Belfast, she now lives and works between her ‘two homes’, her hometown and the village of Roundstone in the West of Ireland, where she has also established an annual international residency (Inishlacken Project).
McGurran's work, suspended between fantasy and reality, has been dominated by images of Roundstone in the West of Ireland, which can act as a protagonist or a backdrop. Her paintings tell stories of people and places inspired by the history of the village, as well as autobiographical elements. More recently, the artist has turned her attention back to Belfast. She has created a new body of work bearing references and suggesting narratives connected to the city and experiences of her life here. Whether inspired by Roundstone or Belfast, her paintings are never completely true to representations of places, histories, and memories, but the real world co-exists and blends with an imagined one.
